Hands-On Modeling Curriculum

Build practical skills with the ecosystem models and methods behind LandEngine.

Offerings

DayCent®, MEMS & Uncertainty Trainings

Hands-on, cohort-based programs introducing DayCent, MEMS, and uncertainty analysis. These intensive courses combine the underlying theory with practical tools for implementing models. Cohorts are intentionally small to allow individual support, and trainings are offered several times a year.

Core curriculum

DayCent Training

Hands-on training in the daily-timestep biogeochemical model used for greenhouse gas inventories, voluntary markets, and conservation assessments.

  • Model structure: soil carbon dynamics, nitrogen cycling, and plant growth
  • Preparing site, weather, soil, and management inputs
  • Running simulations with the LandEngine Model Runner

Next-gen framework

MEMS Training

Learn the history, science, and mechanics of the MEMS model from its developers, with one-on-one instruction to set up and run it.

  • The MEMS framework and measurable soil carbon fractions
  • Grazing management and deep soil dynamics
  • Running MEMS on the LandEngine platform

Advanced methods

Uncertainty Training

A multi-day course on uncertainty in ecosystem model predictions for rigorous soil carbon and greenhouse gas accounting.

  • Sources of uncertainty in data, parameters, and model structure
  • Methods for propagating and quantifying uncertainty
  • Uncertainty in soil carbon and N₂O accounting
